But, they kept insisting that it was for a wedding. They almost weren't allowed to bring (the cream) in. They had quite an awful time at the airport with the agricultural inspectors. "My family flew in from England, and they brought clotted cream with them for the scones. It was a beautiful October day and there were masses of flowers and a teapot on each table. "The wedding was held in the gardens of a friend's mansion, and we had tea after the ceremony," Rivers says. Rivers married again, in 1983, to Tom Bowlin. The two came to the Bay Area and wed, and remained married for seven years. "When Willis came home from the Vietnam War," Rivers says, "he was having a tough time getting back into the groove of life, so he decided to travel and explore for a while. Rivers was going through a management training program and Willis Pizzotti was traveling through Europe and picking up work when he needed it. The two met while they were both working at a hotel in England. "Things have changed so much since I first moved here," she said.īorn in London and raised in Dorset, "that's Thomas Hardy country," she says, Rivers moved to the Bay Area because "I fell in love with an American and he lived here. Rivers is also thrilled that these days she can find good teas at her neighborhood store. "The popularity of teas keeps growing and growing here. She was in San Ramon on a recent Sunday to read from her book "Time for Tea" (Crown Publishers, $22) at the annual Victorian Tea fund-raiser.Īlthough "Time For Tea" was published seven years ago, Rivers says that she is still often called on for speaking engagements and lectures on the subject. "I got this from a sweet little shop I found in Doverton, a small village in England."įor the record, Rivers, 49, doesn't always dress like this. "Oh this?" she says, gently touching her hat. Of course, the fact that she's wearing an elaborate, handmade hat and a matching cream-colored, long, flowing dress, accented by her grandmother's pearls, adds quite a bit to the overall effect.
